Can a Tea Bag Be Brewed More Than Once?

You may have heard that high-quality tea - especially loose leaf tea - can be brewed multiple times. Some sources even suggest three to five infusions from the same tea.

So what’s the truth?
The answer depends on how the tea is brewed.

Why Some Teas Are Brewed Multiple Times

When people talk about brewing tea three, four, or even five times, they’re usually referring to a specific brewing method called gongfu-style brewing.

In this method:

  • A larger amount of loose leaf tea is used

  • Tea is brewed in very small volumes of water

  • Steeping times are short and gradual (for example: 30 seconds, then 45 seconds, then 60 seconds, and so on)

Each infusion extracts a different layer of flavor, creating a sequence of evolving cups rather than one long brew.

This approach works especially well with:

  • Whole loose leaf teas

  • Large, tightly rolled leaves

  • Teas brewed in small teapots or gaiwans

How Tea Bags Are Brewed (And Why It’s Different)

In everyday brewing - the way most of us make tea at home - the approach is very different.

Tea bags (including pyramid sachets) are designed for:

  • One full extraction

  • A standard cup of water

  • Steeping times of 1–3 minutes or 3–5 minutes, depending on the tea type

In this method, the tea releases most of its flavor, aroma, and body during the first brew.

While a second steep may still produce liquid, it’s usually much lighter, flatter, and less balanced.

Our Recommendation

We don’t recommend brewing a tea bag more than once.

Our tea sachets contain 3 grams of whole leaf tea, carefully portioned to deliver a complete and satisfying cup in a single brew. Re-steeping dilutes the flavor rather than revealing something new.

If you enjoy exploring multiple infusions and evolving flavors, loose leaf tea brewed gongfu-style is a better fit for that experience.

If you’re brewing a tea bag, one well-brewed cup is where the tea truly shines.

Final Thoughts

There’s no single “right” way to brew tea - only different techniques designed for different purposes.

Multi-infusion brewing is a mindful, ritual-driven practice.
Tea bags are made for simplicity, consistency, and a great cup every time.

Choose the method that fits your moment - and enjoy it fully.
